Right of Way Vegetation

Residents can request Board assistance with vegetation management in the Right of Way (RoW) areas. Proper maintenance of RoW vegetation is crucial for preserving community standards, ensuring clear sight lines, and maintaining safety and property values. Overgrown vegetation can obstruct views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, impede public access, create safety hazards, and potentially violate local regulations.
The Board works in cooperation with the City of Shoreline, whose ordinances (e.g., Shoreline Municipal Code 12.15 and 20.50.310) assign responsibility to adjacent property owners for managing RoW vegetation. The Board also ensures compliance with state laws like RCW 47.24.020 and RCW 64.38.020, which govern public space maintenance and authorize homeowner associations to preserve safety and views.
In consultation with neighbors and the City of Shoreline, the Board will address RoW vegetation issues to maintain both public accessibility and scenic views. All residents are expected to comply with covenants and applicable municipal and state regulations.
To help the Board efficiently assess and address your RoW vegetation request, please include the following details:
  • Location of Vegetation: Describe the precise location within the RoW, including nearby streets or landmarks.
  • Nature of the Issue: Specify whether the vegetation obstructs views, access, or poses a safety concern. Include the type of vegetation and the extent of the problem.
  • Impact on Views or Safety: Explain how the vegetation affects views or creates safety or accessibility issues.
  • Photographs (Optional): Attach photos showing the vegetation and its impact.
  • Your Contact Information: Ensure your contact details in the owners’ portal are up to date for follow-up.
The Board will review your submission and work to ensure compliance with IAC covenants, City ordinances, and Washington State regulations.
